Students practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques during a class at BJJ Lab Winterthur.

Whether you prefer Gi or No-Gi (Grappling), our classes are designed to help you grow step by step.
Every session follows a clear plan with a mix of technique, game-based drills, and live practice, all inspired by modern methods.

We always finish with about 30 minutes of sparring, so you can test what you’ve learned.

BASICS

Perfect for beginners. In just 5 weeks, you’ll hit the ground running and learn the essential positions and objectives of grappling. You’ll develop core skills including takedowns, submissions, defense, and escapes. Everything you need to build a strong foundation.

FUNDAMENTALS

Ideal for practitioners of all experience levels. We focus on a selection of the most effective techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling. Our training emphasizes fundamental moves that will make you a stronger, smarter fighter at any belt.

ADVANCED

Advanced classes cover open guard variations, leg locks, back takes, and other techniques proven effective in top-tier competitions. While more specialized to sport grappling, these skills refine precision, timing, and strategy.

Each membership gives you access to all classes on our schedule.

To make it easy to get started, we offer a five week intro package for new members that includes access to all trainings and a uniform (gi or nogi set). And since many people ask: yes, you own the uniform, it is not a loaner.

If this sounds like it would suit you, talk to us after your first class.

All memberships are prepaid, giving you total flexibility with no long-term ties. Stay because you love training, not because you’re locked in. If you get injured or have another reason why you cannot train for a prolonged time, let us know. We can almost always find a mutually beneficial solution.

* Applies to students at a university, applied science university, apprentices, and those still in school. Also applies to people with a Kulturlegi.

Below you find some of the most frequently asked questions. If you have other questions, that you would like to ask, just contact us either through WhatsApp (+41 78 339 23 32) or our contact form below. See you on the mats!

What should I bring for my first training?

Bring comfortable sports clothing (without any zippers) and a water bottle. If you want to shower at the gym, bring a towel as well. We will loan you anything else you may need and if you want to continue with the sport, we have a shop where you can buy anything you would need.

Do I have to be in shape to start BJJ?

Not at all! BJJ is a perfect way to get in shape. Our courses are created to fit all fitness levels. You will improve your strength, flexibility, and cardio by starting to train with us.

Is BJJ safe for beginners?

Yes! Safety is our number one priority. We value correct technique and exercising control during training. New members start with the safe basic techniques and we teach how to fall and prevent injuries during training.

How often should I train as a beginner to get better?

We recommend to start with 2 trainings per week. This gives your body time to adjust while getting sufficient stimulation to improve at the sport. As you get better and more used to the sport, you can increase to however many classes you want. Be sure to take a day or two off whenever you feel like it, you know your body best!

What’s the difference between Gi and Nogi in BJJ?

Gi is the traditional uniform (you may know it from Judo or Karate). This allows more grips for control and submission and generally speaking it is more static than Nogi. In Nogi, we train in Shorts and a Shirt, and you must not grip the clothing. Therefore, it is more about getting grips on your partner like in Wrestling or Grappling.

In both, the goal is the same: get the opponent to the ground, find a controlling position and try to submit the opponent.

What if I miss a class?

No worries. Everything we teach is available on video on BJJ Lab Online. Your access is included in the membership.

What if I am late to class?

Of course we are happy if you can be there on time and this way you don’t miss anything. But we understand that this is a hobby for most people and you have other things in life that you have to take care of. In that spirit: just show up! If you can still make it, it’s better to train a little than not to train at all.

What to do in an open mat?

Open mat means the gym is open but no course is taught. You can use this time to do whatever you want. We recommend that you find a partner to bring with you and then the two of you can go over techniques or positions you want to improve. You can spar, you can do positional rounds, games, or drill. Some people watch instructionals on the mats and try the new techniques right away.

Do I have to compete at some point?

No. We encourage everyone to try out competition at least once because if you never try, how do you know whether you enjoy it? But we have members who prefer not to compete because of different reasons and this is totally fine. If you want to compete, tell us! We are more than happy to help you prepare optimally.

Do I have to bow before the mat?

No. There are gyms where this is a form of respect, but we don’t care about that. You don’t have to call the coach “Professor” either. We do appreciate if you say hi to everyone who is training and if you introduce yourself to new people or to everyone if you are new.

I don’t want to roll with someone. Do I have to?

No. You can reject a round with anyone for any reason. Nobody should get upset about that.

Are there forbidden techniques / moves?

Yes. Don’t slam people from closed guard. Don’t jump into submissions or into closed guard. These moves have a high probability of injuring someone, and this is bad for everyone. Always try to keep your partners safe.

Do I have to train in the Gi?

No. We offer both Gi and Nogi classes, and you can train in whatever you prefer. We don’t see big differences between the two, some just like one better than the other.

What kind of memberships do you have?

First week is free, so you can try our gym. Other than that we sell monthly and yearly memberships. You get access to all classes with every membership. Click here to see all prices.

I want to train sometimes in Winterthur and sometimes in Zurich. Is that possible?

Your membership with us lets you go to one class a week at the BJJ Lab Zurich. And the open mat on Sunday is always free as well. If you want to visit more than one class a week at the other location, please talk to us directly.
